Health Rhythms involves recreational music making as well
as relaxation exercises to increase health and wellness. Research
has shown that Recreational Music Making and Group Drumming
Sessions can help people defend from stress and burn-out, increase
immune functioning and natural cell activity, as well as facilitate
personal expression and increase communication among group members.
Workshops are offered privately, in health-care settings, community
based settings as well as businesses and corporations. Shari
has trained as a facilitator in Health Rhythms with one of the
Medical Doctors and researchers who has been involved in scientific
research.
Group drumming has been used for health care workers to prevent
stress and burn out which can cause them to leave their jobs.
For example, staff at a nursing home in Pennsylvania participated
in six group-drumming sessions with their coworkers, and consequently
experienced a 50% improvement in mood, including a decrease
in feelings of fatigue, anxiety and depression. Further, 49
less employees left their jobs than the previous year, saving
the facility nearly $400, 000 associated with the costs of hiring
and training new employees.
Group drumming is also used to increase personal and emotional
expression in people suffering from cancer as well as chronic
illnesses. A study by Dr. Barry Bittman and colleagues reveals
that drumming sessions increased immune functioning as well
as natural killer cell activity. This does not claim to cure
cancer and other illnesses, but rather has the potential to
increase the body's immune functioning as well as express and
resolve emotional challenges related to the disease and hence
increase quality of living.
Drumming has also been used to help children who come from violent
or at risk home situations to express their emotions and anger
in a healthy forum. Drumming can be a form of personal empowerment,
and can help balance mood disturbances. Drumming can also increase
a sense of connection, to one's self, others and one's spirituality,
as well as help to create and build communities.
Shari also facilitates as well as organizes drum circles
around the Toronto and Grey County area. |
